Getting to Baden-Powell Junior School

The journey to and from school is one that will be undertaken most days, so it’s an important thing to consider. At Baden-Powell and St Peter’s Church of England Junior school we encourage children to get active by walking, cycling or scooting for all or part of their journey to and from school.

Fewer families travelling to school by car will help us reduce vehicular congestion outside of our school gates and create a safer, more pleasant environment.

Benefits of Active Travel

Building physical activity into your families daily routine – This can help to boost mental health and well-being – It’s also been shown that getting active in the morning can increase concentration throughout the school day.

It will help to increase your child’s road safety awareness and boost their independence.

Walking and cycling to school provides a chance to teach them about being safe when travelling and will help build their confidence.

Fewer cars means cleaner air and safer roads.

Young lungs are particularly vulnerable to air pollution so reducing the amount of cars around the roads around our school can have a big impact on health – Did you know that an idling car engine can produce up to twice as many fumes as when a car is in motion? Consider as well that many of our young people are no taller than the bonnet of an average SUV and trying to cross a heavily congested road can be very dangerous for them.

Park and Stride

On street parking is very limited around the school as we are surrounded by residential properties. We do understand that some parents and carers need to drive to school, but we ask that if you need too that you park respectfully.

The map below shows approximate five and ten minute walking zones from our Mill Lane entrance. We ask that where possible you find somewhere to park within the orange area and walk the rest of the way.

Bike and Scooter Storage

We have ample secure scooter and bicycle storage on the school grounds and we always encourage the use of locks and helmets for anyone travelling to school this way – Most of our storage is covered too so no need to worry about soggy saddles om wet days!

The shelters are easily accessible at the start and end of the school day.

Support with Walking and Wheeling to School

Baden-Powell Junior school works with Sustrans, the charity that makes it easier for everyone to walk and cycle. We are a Bike It Plus school so have a dedicated officer to support our active travel goals.

Throughout the school year we will be working with Sustrans to offer a number of activities to encourage active travel in school. These activities could include things like; free bike servicing and safety checks in school for children, staff and carers, active travel challenges and competitions, learn to ride sessions and even cycle skills and games. Look out for announcements if you’d like your child to take part.

Sustrans have a number of resources on their website to support everyone to walk, wheel and cycle safely – Take a look!

BCP council have also created a helpful map of the local area, particularly if you are looking for suggested cycle routes and dedicated cycle and walking infrastructure.
