Below, is a break down of the topics we cover in Year 6.

At BPSP, our ambitious, vibrant and inclusive curriculum has been developed with the intention of providing all our learners with key knowledge and skills for long-term learning and with the cultural capital to become responsible and valuable citizens in our modern society.

From Year 3 through to Year 6, we study a wide variety of subjects, making cross-curricular links where relevant (see curriculum overviews on the school website for more detail) In addition, we regularly recap and revisit previous knowledge so it can be recalled and applied to different contexts in order to deepen the learning experience for all children.

Autumn 1

English – We explore a variety of text types and genres to develop writing skills. We base our lessons on high quality texts that provide a writing stimulus. In Autumn 1, we are working from: Number the Stars, Once, Rose Blanche and a film clip called German in the Woods.  

Music – This term, we learn to play the rhythms of ‘Samba Batucada’ – the syncopated rhythms used for carnivals.

French – After revising Year 5 vocabulary, we move on to weather vocabulary, consolidating and extending number language as well as classroom instructions. 

Art- Through a study of quality artists, we develop pencil skills by exploring tone and texture. We take inspiration from: Kathe Kollwitz, Anne Stanley, Ginny Grayson and L.S Lowry.

Reading – We have weekly lessons to develop and enhance a variety of reading skills through a wide range of quality texts. As part of our school day, we have a dedicated ERIC time four times a week.

Computing - We start with Internet safety, social media use and responsible Internet use before moving on to digital literacy lessons that introduce and enhance a variety of skills. 

PHSE – We have a weekly lesson starting with ‘Being My Best.’ Topics are addressed through a variety of activities.

Physical Education and Games - Children are taught a range of skill development through a variety of activities, games and choice of equipment. In addition to this, the children develop their orienteering skills around the school and are taught gymnastics and dance.

History – We take a thorough exploration of the causes and impact of World War II. We learn dates, facts and figures related to this historical event. We discuss what has been learned about the impact of the War.

Science – We study the cardiorespiratory system in mammals.

Religious Education: We follow our school programme called Understanding Christianity and start the term with a topic called ‘People of God’
