Below, is a break down of the topics we cover in Year 5

At BPSP, our ambitious, vibrant and inclusive curriculum has been developed with the intention of providing all our learners with key knowledge and skills for long-term learning and with the cultural capital to become responsible and valuable citizens in our modern society.

From Year 3 through to Year 6, we study a wide variety of subjects, making cross-curricular links where relevant (see curriculum overviews on the school website for more detail) In addition, we regularly recap and revisit previous knowledge so it can be recalled and applied to different contexts in order to deepen the learning experience for all children.

Autumn 1

English

This half term, the children revise many aspects of the Year Four writing curriculum centred around The Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling. After this, the learning is focused on ‘The Arrival’ by Shaun Tan; we produce a narrative based on a section of the story.

Maths

All classes follow the National Curriculum and cover the Year 5 objectives throughout the year.  Please see Maths overview for further details.

Reading

Children take part in a number of lessons which are focused on retrieval, inference, authorial intent and vocabulary. Lessons are often tied to our English curriculum books but also linked to our Discovery topics.

Geography

North America is our focus - its geographical diversity and its key physical and human characteristics.

Science

This exciting topic, ‘Properties and Their Changes’, is full of chemical reactions, reversible and irreversible changes.

DT

Scone making is our theme where we use a variety of technology skills to design and create scones.

RE

The Big Frieze - the children strengthen their understanding of Christianity. In the first half term, we look at the Gospels, concentrating on the question: ‘What would Jesus do?’

PHSE

Our PSHE focuses on health, positive relationships and wellbeing, particularly around healthy lifestyles and making the right choices.

French

After revising Year 4 vocabulary, we continue to build up our vocabulary and grammatical knowledge based on the theme of school subjects.

Computing:

This half term the children learn how to use the Internet safely.

Music

This term, children continue to learn the ukulele, developing our skills from Year 4 to be able to sing and play a song.

PE

Year 5 develop their understanding of resilience and how to apply it to physical activities. They also improve their navigational skills and knowledge in orienteering.
