  • Curriculum Overview Year 4

As a school, we follow the primary National Curriculum for Key Stage 2.

    https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/national-curriculum#programmes-of-study-by-subject

Below, is a break down of the topics we cover in Year 4.

At BPSP, our ambitious, vibrant and inclusive curriculum has been developed with the intention of providing all our learners with key knowledge and skills for long-term learning and with the cultural capital to become responsible and valuable citizens in our modern society.

From Year 3 through to Year 6, we study a wide variety of subjects, making cross-curricular links where relevant (see curriculum overviews on the school website for more detail) In addition, we regularly recap and revisit previous knowledge so it can be recalled and applied to different contexts in order to deepen the learning experience for all children.

If you would like any further information regarding our curriculum, please contact the school office at office@bpsp.coastalpartnership.co.uk.

    Growing & Changing

    Summer 1

English: This term, we will be studying and writing fairy tales; formulating a set of instructions; retelling part of the story of ‘Odd and the Frost Giants’ from a different perspective; and creating a rap poem. We’ll be developing our writing skills by working on sentence construction and other key objectives throughout the term.

Maths: - Please see separate overview for more detail.

Computing:  We will be looking at coding using Code.org and Scratch, programmes that develop coding and processing skills. This will also involve understanding the difficulty of translating real problems into programs. We will also experiment with communicating ideas through codes and symbols.

RE: We will be learning about different signs and symbols across a range of religions as well as answering the key question: When Jesus left, what was the impact of Pentecost?

Reading: We will read fairy tales, ‘The Iron Man’ and ‘Odd and the Frost Giants’ and continue working on key reading skills and objectives through a variety of other texts, including poetry.

P.E: During the Summer term, Year 4 will be working on their striking and fielding techniques whilst also being challenged to show leadership skills by leading activities for others. Year 4 will also be developing their navigational and problem-solving skills in orienteering. Alongside these, they will be completing a unit of either resilience, swimming or athletics.

French: We will be learning the names of musical instruments and we will prepare a presentation about ourselves encompassing everything we have been learning in Year 4.

P.S.H.E: We will be discussing friendships and bullying through our Rights and Respect unit. Later in the term, we will begin to explore changes to the body as children grow older. Further information will be supplied nearer the time.

Music: This term, we will be using a variety of instruments to compose a piece of music with a sunset theme.

Science—We will be investigating electricity and how simple circuits work before studying how sounds are heard and how and why volume and pitch can change.

DT: We will be designing and creating a personalised Binca Bookmark using embroidery, with designs and symbols that represent our own interests.

Art: We will be studying colour and how artists use it to convey a mood with particular reference to Kandinsky and Pop Art.

Geography: We will be learning about the sun and how it influences weather and climate in Europe and the world; we will also learn about different climate zones and biomes.

History: We will be studying The Vikings and this will be the theme of activity week and our Hooke Court visit.
