Below, is a break down of the topics we cover in Year 4.

At BPSP, our ambitious, vibrant and inclusive curriculum has been developed with the intention of providing all our learners with key knowledge and skills for long-term learning and with the cultural capital to become responsible and valuable citizens in our modern society.

From Year 3 through to Year 6, we study a wide variety of subjects, making cross-curricular links where relevant (see curriculum overviews on the school website for more detail) In addition, we regularly recap and revisit previous knowledge so it can be recalled and applied to different contexts in order to deepen the learning experience for all children.

Autumn 1

English—In English, we begin by studying ‘Voices in the Park’ by Anthony Browne, as a stimulus for some descriptive writing. Next, ‘Tuesday’ by David Wiesner forms the springboard for writing a narrative before we move onto the much-loved Shakespearean play, Twelfth Night, from which we write a character fact file and retell of a section of the story.

Computing—We learn how to use the Internet safely and how to use Word to present information and pictures.

 RE—We study aspects of Christianity and look further into the main beliefs and religious practices of a Sikh.

Reading—We practise lots of different reading skills by using a variety of fiction and non-fiction texts linked to our Discovery and English topics.

 P.E - We embark on sessions of sending and receiving and dribbling to really home in on the key skills. In addition, we enjoy taking part in gymnastics and dance lessons.

Swimming lessons take place over the year.

 French—We recap our Year 3 French, before learning a variety of animals and the rooms in the house.

 P.S.H.E—We reflect on our rights and responsibilities as well as our personal qualities and celebrate our differences. Anti-bullying is a main focus this term.

 Music— During the first half term, we learn to play the ukulele. We learn a selection of chords whilst playing as a class ensemble. We will also be introduced to reading notation. The second half term, we prepare in earnest for our Christmas Lighthouse concert. We look forward to sharing our talents with you!

Science—We learn about how to classify living things and look at how animals adapt and survive in their natural habitat.

 Geography—We complete a unit where we describe the location of Europe within the world; locate European countries and their borders; as well as compare world capital cities and their features. We use maps, atlases, globes and 4-figure grid references to locate countries and use 4-figure grid references to identify key features of a capital city.

 Art—We develop our pencil and mark-making skills to create insect-themed artwork.

DT—Lettering and paper folding skills are practised and applied to design and produce a wonderful pop-up card.

History—We learn about how and why the Romans invaded Britain as well as looking at the Roman lifestyle and the geography of the Roman Empire. This follows on chronologically from their learning about Celts in Year 3.
