Spelling at BPSP

At Baden-Powell & St. Peter’s CE Junior School, it is essential that our children are equipped with a range of reliable strategies for spelling and can apply these in their independent writing. We encourage our children to show curiosity in actively exploring and investigating the patterns and contradictions of the English language. We believe in a phonics-first, systematic, pattern-seeking approach to the teaching of spelling, consolidated by application across the wider curriculum. Our ultimate aim is to develop ‘brave spellers’: children who see the links and connections between words and who develop independent strategies to build confidence in their spelling choices and speed of recall.
