Maths
At Baden-Powell & St. Peter’s, we value and promote a love of Maths, always endeavouring to help the children understand how what they learn is relevant to their lives. We seek to make connections between Maths and other subjects clear so that our children regard Maths as a useful and transferrable skill.
The children are taught in class in Year Three. Thereafter, we place the children in sets from Year Four to Year Six. All children are taught the same objectives regardless of their set. The size of the group and the amount of additional support vary, as does the length and depth of the input. Worksheets are differentiated in four ways. Regardless of the set, all children have access to the same four levels of challenge, meaning that there is no lid on how aspirational any child can be.
All years start by looking at place value, the four mathematical operations and then any fraction, decimal and percentage work. We are committed to a cyclical approach to teaching (where we revisit key topics several times a year) as we recognise that children are more likely to commit more information to their long-term memory through this approach.
